Kentucky Derby Horse Betting is an independent reference site for American racing fans who want to understand the Run for the Roses and wager on it within the law. We explain the race, the track, the bet types and the rules that decide where a US resident may place a pari-mutuel bet. We do not take bets, hold funds or sell tips.
What the site covers
- The race itself. History, distance and conditions of the Derby, and the points-based road to Louisville that decides the field.
- The venue. A guide to Churchill Downs for anyone attending in person.
- Wagering. How win, place, show, exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets are priced in a pari-mutuel pool, and which ways of betting are legal depending on the state you live in.
- Handicapping basics. Reading past performances, the morning line and scratches, in our horse racing primer.
Where our facts come from
Race records, distances and winners are checked against Churchill Downs, the official KentuckyDerby.com site and Equibase, the industry database of North American racing results. Legal questions are answered from state law and from the racing commissions that license advance deposit wagering (ADW) companies and tracks. When a source and an older page disagree, the primary source wins and the page is corrected.
Odds change until the gates open, so we never print live prices. Any figure on this site that can move, such as a takeout rate or a field limit, carries the source it came from.
Who writes the pages
Every article is published under one byline: the Kentucky Derby Horse Betting Editorial Team. You will not find invented handicappers, job titles or win records here. Readers can judge a page by its sources, which are listed with each article.
How the site is funded
Our pages carry no paid placements, and no betting operator buys a mention or a ranking. Where we name licensed ADWs, we do so as a matter of fact, because readers need to know which services hold a licence in their state. If the site ever adds commercial links, they will be labelled clearly and this page will say so.
Bet responsibly
Racing wagers are for adults only, and each state sets its own minimum age. Set a budget before Derby day and keep to it. Free, confidential help is available around the clock at 1-800-MY-RESET, and our responsible gambling page lists more options. Questions or corrections are welcome through the contact page.
