The short answer

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships run on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. There are 22 races over the two days, 14 of them Grade 1 Championship races, worth more than $34 million in purses and awards. The $7 million Longines Classic is scheduled for 6:16 pm ET on Saturday. In the US you can bet every race legally through the same pari-mutuel pools at the track, at a simulcast venue or through an advance deposit wagering (ADW) account your state allows.

This is Keeneland’s fourth Breeders’ Cup, after 2015, 2020 and 2022. If you searched for “Breeders’ Cup 2026 Del Mar”, that was 2024 and 2025: this year the event is back in the Bluegrass, about 80 miles from Churchill Downs.

Race-by-race schedule and post times

Race names above drop the sponsors’ names for readability; the official titles carry sponsors such as Longines, FanDuel and Maker’s Mark. Eight undercard races fill out the two cards. On TV, NBC Sports shows all 14 Championship races: USA Network from 1 to 6 pm ET on Friday, then USA from 1 to 3:30 pm and NBC from 3:30 to 6:30 pm on Saturday.

How the Breeders’ Cup feeds the Kentucky Derby

The Juvenile is the richest Derby-points race of the autumn. Its first five finishers earn 30, 15, 9, 6 and 3 points on the Road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby, three times what an ordinary early prep pays. The Juvenile Fillies pays the same scale toward the Kentucky Oaks. The turf juvenile races carry no points, because the Derby and the Oaks are run on dirt.

A Juvenile winner usually goes into the winter near the top of the leaderboard, but 30 points alone rarely secure a Derby gate: the spring Championship Series pays up to 100 points to the winner. Our Road to the Kentucky Derby guide lists every prep race and its points.

How to bet the Breeders’ Cup legally

All US betting on the Breeders’ Cup is pari-mutuel, the same system as the Derby. Your money goes into a pool, the host deducts its takeout and the rest is shared among winning tickets, so the odds keep moving until the gates open. There are three legal routes:

  • At Keeneland, at the mutuel windows and self-service machines.
  • At a simulcast venue or off-track betting site, including casinos with a racebook, which bet into the same pools.
  • Through a licensed ADW account, if the state you are in when you bet allows online racing wagers. TVG is the Breeders’ Cup’s official wagering partner; the event’s own Betting Challenge also lists Keeneland Select, Xpressbet, TwinSpires and NYRA Bets among its platforms. That is their list, not our recommendation.

Whether you can open an online account depends on your state, not on the platform. Our guide to betting on horse racing legally explains how to check, and the bet types guide covers exactas, trifectas and the multi-race Pick 4 and Pick 6 that are popular on Breeders’ Cup days.

What Keeneland takes out

Pool Takeout
Win and place 16%
Show 10% on track, 16% off track
Exacta 19.5%
Trifecta, superfecta, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 6 22%
Daily double, Pick 5 15%

These are Keeneland’s standard rates. We could not find a published statement that Breeders’ Cup cards use different rates, so check the program for each pool on the day.

The Classic: what to know

The Classic is run over 1¼ miles on dirt, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby, and is the richest race of the US season. In a media poll published on 22 September 2026, Forever Young was ranked first after winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup at the reopened Belmont Park, with Sovereignty second. Polls do not decide the field: pre-entries and the post-position draw do, closer to the race.

Recent Classic winners

Year Winner Track Jockey Trainer
2025 Forever Young (JPN) Del Mar Ryusei Sakai Yoshito Yahagi
2024 Sierra Leone Del Mar Flavien Prat Chad Brown
2023 White Abarrio Santa Anita Irad Ortiz Jr. Rick Dutrow Jr.
2022 Flightline Keeneland Flavien Prat John Sadler
2021 Knicks Go Del Mar Joel Rosario Brad Cox

Forever Young became the first Japanese-trained winner of the Classic in 2025, beating Sierra Leone by half a length in 2:00.19, and paid $9.00 for a $2 win ticket.

How much is bet on the Breeders’ Cup

The two days drew $180.0 million from all sources in 2025 at Del Mar, the third-highest figure ever, of which $118.0 million came on Saturday. The record, $189.1 million, was set the last time Keeneland hosted, in 2022. Pools that large mean a modest bet barely moves the price, the same as on Derby Day.
